New technology has made our everyday lives easier in so many ways! There is technology we use very often - maybe without even knowing it - in our vehicle called Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
For Starters, What Is ADAS?
Advanced Driver Assistance Systems are cameras, sensors, and radars in your car that provide safety features, such as Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Automatic Emergency Braking, etc., which are designed to prevent accidents. Have you ever gotten too close to a car in front of you or veered out of your lane and your car beeps and brakes for you? Well, you have an ADAS in your car!
Why Do I Need To Have My Windshield Recalibrated?

An ADAS camera is usually installed behind the windshield! See that little box behind your rear view mirror? That's your camera! It is essential to have your ADAS camera recalibrated after a windshield replacement because it needs to be adjusted to the new glass to make sure it's viewing everything correctly and sending the information to your car's onboard computer. If you do not get a recalibration for the ADAS some of the key features can malfunction, increase the risk of an accident, and endanger everyone that is in the car.
Failing to properly calibrate the ADAS camera can cause the camera to not work properly and cause errors in the ADAS system.
Different Types of Calibrations
Depending on your vehicle and ADAS, your calibration can be static, dynamic, or both (aka dual)!
Static Calibration
Static calibration is stationary and involves adjusting the ADAS camera with specialized equipment to the correct height and to work properly with the other cameras and/or sensors on your car.
This type of calibration requires specialized software for the hard-coded values in the camera and a fixed target image in front of the vehicle at a specific distance that the sensors must detect and respond to in order to calibrate properly.
Dynamic Calibration
Dynamic calibration requires the vehicle to be in motion so that the sensors, cameras, and radars collect data through different scenarios and environments that is then used to adjust the ADAS system(s).
This type of calibration requires the vehicle to be driven on the road with traffic to record different speeds, turns, and terrain changes with the help of a hand-held device connected to the vehicle's overall system.
